Frequently Asked Questions

When using the long stitch the stitch occasionally goes wrong, with the thread becoming loose and breaking on the underside...any ideas?

It sounds as if you are losing tension from time to time. Check the following:

  1. Be sure that you thread the machine with the presser foot in the UP position. This opens the tension disk and allows the thread to seat in the disk when the foot is lowered.
  2. If you are using the presser foot lifter lever, be sure that your knee does not touch it while you are sewing. This could affect the tension and make the top thread loose and loop on the underside.
  3. Sometimes the tension disk collects lint. Fold a piece of lint-free fabric like muslin or calico and with the presser foot in the up position, "floss" the tension disk with the folded edge.
  4. If the thread is "slippery" try using a thread net to control the thread and keep it from falling off the spool.

If you continue to have the problem, take your machine to your BERNINA® store and have their Authorized Bernina Technician check it. Take a scrap of your fabric and try to demonstrate the problem for them. If you have a piece of fabric that shows what happens, take that along also.
