Frequently Asked Questions

Can I replace heavy zippers in jackets and parkas?

Heavy zippers can be sewn on the BERNINA® sewing machine using Zipper Foot #4. Follow the zipper manufacturer's instructions (usually printed on the zipper packaging) for inserting it. You can also refer to the Zipper Insertion pages in your BERNINA® sewing machine's instruction book.

Be sure to use the size and type of needle that is compatible with the size and type of thread. We'd suggest a Universal #80 or #90 needle with Mettler's Metrosene long staple polyester thread in both the needle and bobbin.

There are more detailed instructions on zippers and use of the foot in our Feet-ures publication, comprehensive full-color reference guide to all BERNINA® presser feet, attachments and accessories. Feet-ures is available from your BERNINA® store. It would be a great addition to your sewing library for reference when using different feet. Information on zipper insertion using Zipper Foot #4 is found in Feet-ures, Volume 1.
