Frequently Asked Questions

How do you sew a ¼ inch seam when using the BERNINA® Walking Foot?

The distance between the needle in the center position and the inside of the front part of the toe of both Walking Foot soles is ¼".

Examine the foot and you will notice there is an etched line on each toe. (If you have problems locating the line, study the picture to the right. The ones in the picture have been marked with red.)

Use the etched line when guiding the fabric. Place the edge of the fabric or a seam along this etched line on the inside toe to stitch ¼" seams. Even with the edge of the fabric in this position there is still enough contact between all three foot pads and the feed dogs to transport the fabric properly.

Instructions come with most of the feet, but there are more detailed instructions in our Feet-ures publication, a comprehensive full-color reference guide to all BERNINA® presser feet, attachments and accessories. There are three (3) Feet-ures volumes available at your local BERNINA® store.  Detailed instructions for creating piping using Walking Foot #50 can be found in Feet-ures Volume 2.
